Checks & Balance

I love the fashion of the Swingin’ 60s – hello, Mad Men, anyone? The 50s and early 60s dress shapes were all about femininity – many dresses of that period accentuated the hourglass silhouette.

However, perhaps due to the fact that I have nothing close to an hourglass shape, my favourite part of 60s fashion was the later part, when the mod side took centre stage.  I love Twiggy-esque silhouettes; mini-dresses, nude lips, Vivier flats…and Mary Janes rock!

Pssst. Peggy from Mad Men loves her checks, plaids and polka dots too!

Studs & Monochrome

This was about two days after I lopped off my hair, and ironically I was one of the people least shocked by, and needing the least time to ‘get used to’ this look. What do you think of my shorter ‘do?

I’m a fan of colours, so it’s not very often I choose a monochrome look. I am in love with this maryjulian Hensley Studded Shirt though – I’ve kept pieces in both white and black – the fit is super flattering, and the studs instantly add interest to the simplest of outfits – no colour needed!

I love a boyfriend silhouette, so decided to play that up with peg-leg trousers. Had to keep some femme in the look though, so cue the heels and arm candy, heh!

Swallows & Asymmetry

I have so many pictures I’ve been meaning to share, so apologies that these aren’t the most current – my hair is now short! ;p I have a real thing for prints, and I love the asymmetry and slim fit of this skirt. Produced a dress version for DDF here, which I find perfect for both formal events (dressed up with killer heels, a chunky necklace and a tiny clutch) as well as for everyday wear (with sneakers and a slouchy backpack).

Tassels & Lace

I love lace and texture, although I find tassels a tad tricky to work; the look can go very quickly into country-and-western hell (that, or curtain-territory).

I found this top at a flea market that I really like though – the bold block of mustard balanced with sheer lace and a fine shower of tassels. That said, I still chose to keep the rest of the outfit simple – minimal accessories and a neutral palette.

Outfit Giveaway

Can’t believe we are already September; time passes really quickly! To celebrate the launch of my new blog, and to thank you for your support, I’ve decided to do an outfit giveaway for all you readers! I really enjoy reading all your lovely comments on my outfits – thank you for your kind words! Thanks also for sending me pictures of yourselves wearing maryjulian; for me, that’s the best compliment anyone can give —wearing the pieces I very carefully curate or design.

It’s really simple to take part in this giveaway. All you have to do is leave a comment on my blog (with your name and email address so we can get in touch with you!), telling me which outfit below you like the best and why.

These are some my favourite outfits these past few weeks; hope find one that you like too! For this very first giveaway, I’ll be giving away the very first outfit I posted on this blog, seen here.

One lucky reader will get this Jackson Military dress in red, as well as some arm candy! I really love this dress because it’s versatile in its simplicity, but the military buttons give it a twist and make it unique. Perfect for Sunday brunches or even to work if you throw a blazer over. So it’s that simple; let me know your outfit pick, why you like it best, and stand to win these great pieces kindly sponsored by Jipaban.com!

I will pick a winner by the 12th of September, so remember to comment by then!

Leather

You already know I love texture, and leather and lace (cliche unintended!) are some of my favourite materials. I got this 100% natural leather skirt some time back from MNG, and it’s one of my favourite go-to pieces for days when I don’t know what to wear – perfect with one of my many slouchy tees!
