Utilitarian

What do you wear to work? I interned at a PR firm while I was studying at SMU, then went on to work in an advertising agency when I graduated, and while they were not the most corporate of jobs, nor did my bosses actually come right out to dictate what to wear, I felt there were still certain standards that had to be adhered to – denim cut-offs, for example, I think are inappropriate in most typical office settings!

These days though, my ‘work wear’ usually means something comfortable and practical, depending on what I have to get done for the day. I sometimes have to lug around a whole bunch of stuff, so while I prefer smaller bags, quite often I end up carrying bigger ones on crazy work days. Utilitarian doesn’t have to be boring though! I find that a good, flattering fit, the right accessories and a nice pair of shoes go a long way. (And yes, I deem denim cut-offs a ‘Do’!)

Let me know how you decide how to dress for work each day!

Blue Suede Shoes

Elvis Presley is one of my heroes, and he obviously loved his shoes too! Ok I’m not actually certain he did, but I’m sure you’ve heard ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ – even if you’re not an Elvis fan. If you haven’t (horrors!) you can check out The King himself here.

So I have my own pair of blue suede shoes, and they are my current favourite because they may every outfit look better – even my old denim cut-offs!

LolliPOP-UP: Jipaban x Blogger Bazaar party this Sunday!

So I’ve been really busy of late with maryjulian and Jipaban – all in the name of bringing you exciting things! First up – what are you doing this Sunday? We’re throwing a party at Zouk from 11am – 6pm, so come by with your friends and family and spend a fun day with me! =)

Jipaban will be popping up at Zouk for a blogger bazaar party this Sunday, 2nd of June 2013.

This LolliPOP-UP event will showcase an extensive range of carefully curated items from Jipaban’s e-commerce brands including women’s apparel & accessories, menswear, fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs and video games – all going at up to 80% off!

The bazaar will bring together the best of the blogosphere, with favourite fashion and lifestyle bloggers selling their pre-loved clothes and an array of beauty samples. Bloggers include Dawn Yang (clapbangkiss.xanga.com), Zoe Raymond (zoeraymond.com), Miss Universe 2011 Valerie Lim (dweam.com), Rachell Tan (rachelltan.com), Sophie Willocq (sophiewillocq.blogspot.sg), Jessica (tippytapp.blogspot.sg), beauty blogger Evonne (evonnz.com), menswear & lifestyle blogger Ben Toh (typicalben.blogspot.sg), and many more.

I’m also super excited to show off the Summer 2013 collection – there will be a very limited pre-sale of some of the items on Sunday, so be sure to check that out too! Here’s a sneak preview in the meantime!

Jipaban is collaborating with heaps of other cool people for the party— for coffee fanatics, there is Strangers’ Reunion; the amazing folks from The Ice Cream & Cookie Co. will be hawking their delicious ice-cream sandwiches; there’ll be makeover booth by ZA and Maybelline; and a fun photowall where shoppers can take snaps with their friends and favourite bloggers.

This is not your typical flea – it’s a fun Sunday out!

See you then! xx

Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen

It took some getting used to, and has been  little hard to get the words out when asked my age, but I have come to terms with it – I’m 30 (and fabulous, haha!).

One of the girlfriends says ’30 is the new 20′, and I’ve to both agree yet disagree with her. Yes, as it implies that youth, and all the fun and spontaneity that comes with being ‘young’ doesn’t stop at 30. But no because #1: who says 30 isn’t ‘young’; and #2: who says 20-somethings have all the fun?? (Even if I did have a LOT of fun in my 20s…but then I enjoyed my teenage years as well, so…)

And so yes, this 30-year old knows that turning ‘Dirty Thirty’ is simply an excuse to celebrate many times over. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my life these 30 years, and thank you for not just putting up with the crazy that comes with that, but for also joining in sometimes.

Balik Kampung

I’m definitely not print-shy – I love a cool print, and I’m always on the lookout for unusual or standout prints and patterns.

I like them for two reasons, one is that they are so much more fun and interesting than plain fabric – andI love the new trend of wearing pattern on pattern! (For those who have seen my Instagram feed and asked me about that; I will share how I mix my patterns in another post.)

Two, because I remember trying to create prints from single motifs during art class back in school – a lot of thought, effort and tweaks go into creating the more complicated kinds of prints, and it makes me appreciate an interesting print all the more. Even now as I source for materials to manufacture a design in, I find it quite a challenge to find prints that are both pleasing to the eye and fit the design of a piece.

I hence love this shirt. The print depicts scenes from an old village; or a ‘kampung’, as we call it in Singapore and Malaysia. It’s also bang on trend if you’re going for the monochrome look – just wear it with a black and/or white bottom. And the metal collar tips pull it all together.

Brocade Blush

Love this take on brocade! Traditional brocade is usually textured and heavy, but this this is such a fresh and modern way to work the trend – plus the mirror print really ups the style ante.

Have a soft spot for pastels as well, and peplums really work if you’ve a boyish figure like mine – instant curves!

Chose to accessorize in warm shades of tangerine, blush and yellow to brighten up the look.
