My Long-Story Love Story

I’m getting married soon, and everyone’s been asking who I’m marrying, lol. There are no pictures of him on my Instagram, Facebook or this website. Maybe he’s an imaginary boyfriend?

We met when we were 15. All Catholic kids have to go through 10 years of catechism classes (from primary one till you get Confirmed at 16) and we were no exception. I was actually taking classes in another church (it’s the same in Catholic churches all over the world) but I was a bit of a naughty kid and had been skipping classes for a couple of months before the teacher called my mother to ask why I had not been attending classes. She flipped, of course, as she had no idea! (Every Sunday, I would take the bus before 8am like I was going for catechism…and go hang out with my friends instead.)

My mum was so upset that I had been skipping classes (sorry, mum!) that when she bumped into a nun who used to teach her in school, she told her about it. Long story short was that she pulled me out of that church and I started classes in another catholic church.

Kids usually start and finish their entire catechism journey in one church, so joining this new bunch at 15, when everyone already knew everyone, meant I was the “new kid in school” and had to work harder to make friends. It was cool though and I was really happy in the new environment except for one thing: I remember my boy-crazy younger self complaining to a group of girls there that “there are no hot guys in this church”! One of them pointed my now-fiance out and said, “that one not bad what”. I distinctly remember saying, “ok only lah”. Haha!

We never spoke even though I was a social creature who was friends with everyone. I think it was because he was… #1, really shy and hardly ever (maybe never!) spoke and #2, not in class half the time as he was then a national athlete who had training at least twice a day, six times a week. We got Confirmed at 16 (kind of like graduation) and I never saw him again.

We bumped into each other more than ten years later, and I actually remembered him as his face hadn’t changed. Oh and he definitely remembered me! Heh. We chatted a little then and he followed up after that with a message. We ended up communicating a lot – without meeting for months.

When we finally met, I remember it was for prawn noodles in our area (we both stay in the east) and he was REALLY quiet. I was pretty bummed and slightly confused. He had asked me out but he didn’t seem interested? He had also shared quite a lot with me prior to that but why was he so silent when we finally met?

I don’t do well with mixed signals (why can’t everyone just be direct!?) and I definitely don’t take to game-playing (maybe he was trying to blow hot and cold?). I wasn’t planning to see him again. I had actually been pretty excited to meet him prior to that date and had told a friend about it. When that friend asked me how it went, I remember saying, “he was really quiet man. I think he’s not interested. I think I’m done with this one.”. This friend said maybe he was just really shy, and shy guys sometimes act like that around girls they like. He encouraged me to go out with him again.

He really did ask me out again and on account of the fact that he was obviously really keen to meet me (so confusing!)…and that I thought his dimples were cute (so shoot me, I’ve my shallow, human moments!) I decided to give him a second chance and go out with him. I remember being determined to not I get excited about it as I did the last time though – I generally hate the feeling of being played like a kite and I refuse to get sucked into hot-cold spirals.

This time though, he opened up and talked to me like the person I thought I had been communicating with the past few months. The rest is history. Well…kind of. We had struggles at the start as we are really different individuals. But still history. (I just want to say that, can!)

So he’s very much real and not my imaginary boyfriend. The reason he doesn’t show up on my social accounts is because he has requested that I don’t post pictures of him! He did agree to go to Mauritius with me for a recent shoot I did for Her World Brides magazine though – tempted by the prospect of beautifully-shot wedding pictures, no doubt. (He is Groomzilla, but more on that in another post!)

Here’s a short video of what went down behind the scenes in Mauritius:

It was such a fun trip, with wonderful people like stylist Steve, his assistant, Evon, photographer Winston and Sha, who made me look half-decent by doing my hair and makeup. It’s also the first shoot ever that I had my other half with me (I personally don’t believe in mixing work and play) and that made it extra special.

Thank you, Her World Brides, for having us!

(See the full story in the September issue of Her World Brides. It’s the one with my mug on the front!)

Behind the Scenes: styleXstyle TV

Recently shot new episodes of styleXstyle TV, and here’s some of the crazy that happens behind the scenes of every shoot with this fun team!

Jade Seah

That elegant lady is Jacq, the director behind the episodes!

Jade Seah

Jade Seah

They told me to pick out a pair of shoes for the shoot. I love sneakers and I was dying over all the bright colours and prints! Decisions, decisions…

Jade Seah

Extremely mind-blowing stuff going on here. This is exactly how I pick out my shoes at home – I take one side of a pair I think may work and because I’m too lazy to actually put it on, I just hold it up and squint a bit as I imagine how the whole outfit will look.

Jade Seah

Yellow won by default over coral as the white-with-blue polka dots were out of my size, boo.

Jade Seah

This was actually pretty awkward, although I tried my best. Jacq asked me to dance, but already I have two left feet and am a terrible dancer (although I still love killing everyone’s eyes and going for it on the dance floor – too bad for you!); and then they’d cut the music so I was basically bopping around to a made-up song in my head. Not good.

Jade Seah

Jade Seah

Tried to look model-ly instead but hmmm. All in the edit – make me look good k, Jacq!! (Knowing her and Sharon though, and their sense of humour, they’ll show all the terrible geeky/goofball moments.)

Jade Seah

These guys are really great though. =) They make working fun!

Jade Seah

Pretty epic one-shot-walking shot. Everything has to go just so when doing such a shot – lines have to be smooth, everyone has to look up and look natural at the right moment, no video-bombers in shot (true story!) and no tripping from the poor camera guy who has his eye on the lens and not where he’s going.(also true story!). Definitely no one-take wonder with this kind of shot!Jade Seah

Sharon on set to help her fashionistas loosen up!

Jade Seah

Check, check! Is it good?

More behind the scenes soon!

How to Take Nice Interior Pictures

Unbeknownst to the Home & Decor team, I sneak-shot some behind the scenes photos while they were shooting at my place, hee. They came around 2pm and shot till the sun set. The place is pretty tiny, so we all figured half a day’s shoot would be more than enough, but since my partner and I are such junk collectors (I actually think I have a slight hoarder problem…), the team said there were so many small areas to shoot, that half a day wasn’t really sufficient. I took that as a compliment! LOL. It also took a lot longer to shoot that if you were to just snap a picture of the space because they art direct and style each and every shot, which is the secret to taking great pictures – applies to both people as well as homes!

Here they were testing the light for the cradle shot.

Jade Seah

Moving furniture around, and testing light for the bar shot. That’s a working spotlight we bought and shipped back from the US. Glad it came in handy for the shoot, haha.

Jade Seah

Setting up of the bar shot. The ‘Banker Lamp’, vintage globe and telephone that sit on the counter are some of my favourite things. =)

Jade Seah

The magic that happens when great styling, art direction and photography comes together. (Don’t mind my personal mess on the dining table!).

Jade Seah

Discussion, then some tweaks to lighting and angle. They used the reflector for a soft bounce of light.

Jade Seah

Caught taking a sneak shot while the team tried to make my accessories collection look pretty!

Jade Seah

They kept some away to take some clutter off the shot. =/

Okay…I’ll look through the lot and give/throw some away…soon…

Jade Seah

At the end of the day, it was my turn to be shot!

Jade Seah

Seeing all the shots properly for the first time that day as Winston, the photographer, brought me through his choices. I felt like a proud parent!

Jade Seah

The selected raws, pre-edit.

Jade Seah

Thanks Rebeckka for the feature, Winston, Nonie, Kaffy and Genie for a great shoot, and Amanda for the write-up! Thanks guys for making the space look gorgeous!

2014 Fashion Trends: The Making Of

The ChicPeek team got together to discuss what and where to film new episodes, and somehow we got sidetracked (as we do!) to bits of industry gossip. I shared with the team how the tables were turned on ME this time when I was interviewed by Mothership on uniforms (army or police? ACS or RI?) and who the best-dressed politician is, and then we got to talking about who got it seriously wrong (sartorially!) in 2013.

In case you are wondering what I meant by ‘the tables were turned on me’; yes, here’s me pouncing on boys in uniforms, lol.

So anyway that led to us deciding to cover what to throw out and what to keep in your wardrobe for 2014, and the team convinced me to open up my place for the filming.

Jade Seah

I am usually very private about my place; over the years, for various reasons, magazines and newspaper have asked to feature my place, but I have usually declined because of my family. They prefer to remain private. My mum balked when I asked her a few years ago if she was okay with a local magazine coming to feature my wardrobe some years ago.

After I moved out to my own place in 2010, I think some of mum may have rubbed off on me, and I still chose not have my place featured. However, I’ve since moved once again, and while my previous place was about 50% of how I wanted it to look, this new place is 90% (meaning almost; in my terms, that’s like practically perfect because I am a perfectionist!) there – dream home, fulfilled!

It is a conservation building and it was in real bad shape, meaning it was a real labour of love to get it to what it looks like now (structures, piping, plumbing, among the other aesthetics…), so I’ve decided to share. It also made filming a lot easier as there wasn’t a need to pack and move clothes, shoes and accessories around! I will give you the grand tour of the space in another episode of ChicPeek, but here’s a sneak peek in the meantime.

Jade Seah

DP Daryl is very precise in what he wants. This is how we achieved the top-angle shots in the video.

Went up to the roof as well!

Jade Seah

Producer Terence demonstrating his favourite ‘fashion pose’, the “Dislocated Elbow’.

Jade Seah

I daresay he does a better job of it than I do!

Had to balance in 3-inch heels and ‘walk up and down’ the ledge to shoot this one. It was a little scary!

Jade Seah

Terence seemed to be having a ball of a time from his even-higher perch. (Try it in heels next time though, buddy!)

Outfit pictures soon! And in case you missed it, here are the finished products:

ChicPeek x Gardens by the Bay

I sometimes run past the beautiful Gardens by the Bay on my long runs, and most races now incorporate that beautiful part of this wonderful country in the official route. Every time I run past, I peek in to see this beautiful, paradise-like place on the other side of the glass. I have actually been inside for photoshoots, (you can see one such shoot here), but it’s different when you are there for work and on a tight schedule to get all the shots in – there isn’t the luxury of really enjoying the place. On my list for 2013 was to make the time to take my folks and my gran there to be able to really explore and appreciate the wonderful flora.

I won’t share the many pictures from the day with my family as they prefer it this way (for those who have asked, that’s why I sometimes have food or holiday posts where I am all alone!), but what happened after that outing was that I was so impressed by the beauty of the place, and how lovely their Christmas display was, that I was determined to shoot an episode of ChicPeek there.

Jade Seah

I am glad to say we made it happen! Together with my production team, Luff Media, we shot at Gardens by the Bay in December for a special festive edition of ChicPeek.. Many, many thanks to my good friend, Valencia Taye (better known as Val, or tangaci to me, haha), who is a horticulturalist at the Gardens, for being instrumental in getting us clearance!

Jade Seah

The Gardens consists of the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Here’s an overview (literally; it’s taken from a higher vantage point) of the Flower Dome, which Val told me is the ‘dry’ part of the Gardens.

Jade Seah

The succulents.

Jade Seah

This was their super cute Christmas Sugar Mountain display!

I love the place and I am proud that it’s one of Singapore’s attractions. One piece of advice if you’re planning on going though – take along a jacket as it’s pretty cold in there!

Party Time! (Behind the Scenes) | styleXstyle TV

So many photos from fun times filming styleXstyle TV reccently, so here’s another post with more!

Tracy Phillips was my guest for one of the episodes, and we had a blast! You can catch the full episode here if you missed it!

She picked out party outfits for both of us, and I was super stoked to be styled by her. I personally don’t do the ‘prom’ kind of evening look well, and it isn’t her style either. Doing jewel tones and drapes here…

And some sparkle and shine here!

Still have more behind the scenes pictures to share, and am also excited to announce that I’ll be working with another stylish personality to create a bunch of edgy looks from a new multi-label store here in sunny Singapore. Catch the episode on Channel 5, styleXstyle TV and on this space soon!

Can you guess who, and which store we’ll be raiding?

Behind the Scenes | styleXstyle TV

I had much fun recently filming a series for styleXstyle and Channel 5! Read the full interview on styleXstyle here.

It’s a fashion series so I basically had a ball of a time putting together outfits, trying on clothes and meeting stylish people to pump them for style tips.

Getting my boots on for the first shot.

Gorgeous Topshop A/W wear with my brown leather knee-highs look cool…but in 34 degrees tropical heat, no joke!

As with almost all scenes, things are never perfect in the first take. Here’s Mel who kept helping me get dressed and ‘undressed’ (catch the episode here to know what I mean!).

With the stylishly fearless Linda Hao! *screams*

Goofing off and acting stupid while everyone else works. Heh.

Sharon and Mel give me the royal treatment!

Love this pinafore look!

With Sharon and the wonderful team from Wing Tai – thanks everyone for making this happen!

More behind the scenes photos soon!
