How to Get a Smaller & Slimmer Face

I’ve always had fuller cheeks, as do most of the women in my family. We call them the ‘Raeburn cheeks’ as most of the relatives on my mum’s side have them. They’ve never been the favourite part of my face. You know how when people put on weight, it goes to different areas for different people – some put on on the thighs and hips; some the butt; these actually makes the body a little curvier and more feminine. Unfortunately, if I do put on the odd kilo or three, it NEVER goes to these areas, it just goes straight to my face!

Some earlier photos, to illustrate my point about the cheeks:

Cambodia in 2008. This was beautifully shot by a wonderful person, but the cheeks, the cheeks! LOL.

This was taken in 2009, five years ago. Age (or the lack thereof – a whole 5 years ago!) may have contributed to the more cherubic face then, but the extra volume in the lower part of the face is pretty apparent.

Jade Seah

Slightly more recent, this was taken in 2010 during a photoshoot for this restaurant that serves awesome ma la (that literally means “spicy and numbing”); it’s indeed a spicy, oily and numbing Chinese sauce that hails from Sichuan or Chongqing; a combination of Sichuan peppercorns that numb the tongue when you bite into them, fiery red chilli peppers, spices and oil.

Jade Seah

Yes, the love affair with ma la (I am absolutely addicted to the stuff; in soup, hot pot or stir-fried form) and with eating in general has always been there. This of course, does not help the face look slimmer – oily and salty foods contribute to water retention, and these are my favourite kinds of foods which I eat on the daily!

So what’s a girl to do to get a smaller face? Surgery? I don’t judge those who choose that route, but I personally am not an advocate. I think we were given the faces and bodies we were given for a reason, and I prefer to try to learn to love it and make the most of it instead of messing with the One Above and His work – I don’t want to permanently alter it.

A friend of mine (who is already very slim with a very small and slim face, mind you!) introduced me to this product more than a year ago, at one of our girly catch-up sessions. It started when I asked if she’d lost weight and she said no – but that she had been using this new product. I was sold and had to try it.

Jade Seah

So therein started my journey with Clarins and their awesome Shaping Facial Lift. I bought a bottle and gave it a go. I was told to use it after toner and before any other skincare (I don’t really use toner though, so I use it straight after washing my face) using this “Manual Auto-Lifting Method” that is a lot easier and enjoyable to do than it seemed at first. Two extra minutes before regular skincare was do-able, even for a lazy beauty regime person like myself!

Here’s a video on this Manual Auto-Lifting Method if you want to learn how it’s done – this is my routine before I hit the sack and when I get up in the morning!

To be really honest, it wasn’t immediately apparent to me – like I didn’t feel like my face had ‘shrunk’ – but friends kept asking if i’d lost weight, and I really hadn’t. This was taken at the bestie’s wedding – I think I’d just started using the product then. There’s more facial contour definition for sure – you can see a slight indentation in the cheek area that you couldn’t in the previous picture.

Jade Seah

Have to make mention of certain not-so-nice “friends” who insisted and/or insinuated I’d gotten work done – same sort of people who on earlier occasions apparently said I “confirmed” did something to my nose – surgery or botox or fillers or whatever – or eyes – for the record, I have not. And I still struggle with uneven eyelids (some days double, some days triple, lol) though I am better at concealing them with makeup. Interesting how people can “confirm” such things, lol. I attribute it to being unhappy with their own lives and I try to say a prayer for them. Sometimes not so easily, I’ll admit!

Moving on from negative people – here’s one in more recent times (taken early this year). You can really see the reduction in cheek volume.

Jade Seah

It works – I was convinced! And so…I was super stoked when Clarins began talks with my manager on becoming their spokesperson for the product! I am particular about the products I endorse, and I have turned down some offers as I didn’t believe in what I was supposed to be endorsing. So to be asked to front a product I already believed in and had already spent good money on purchasing was quite a dream. The deal went through, and I was flown up to Tokyo for the re-launch of the new Shaping Facial Lift in March 2014!

There was a dinner to launch the new Shaping Facial Lift that was held in Happo-en, a beautiful Japanese garden – love pretty places like that.

Jade Seah

This was us on stage at the dinner for the Kagami Biraki ceremony (a Japanese traditional ceremony which translates to “opening the mirror”), together with Dr. Olivier Courtin-Clarins, Managing Director of the Clarins Group; Mr. Laurent Lautier, President of Clarins Asia Pacific and Ms. Sumiko Vormeringer Kobayashi, General Manager, Clarins Japan; that’s Ms Universe Japan, Ms Ayako Hara, next to me and Mr Perry Liu (also known as xiao P lao shi), celebrity makeup artiste from Taiwan on the right.

It was a fun trip that didn’t quite feel like work! Plus Cheryl from Clarins Singapore took great care of us – arranging an awesome makeup artiste and hair stylist for me so I’d look good, and researching yummy food places to take us to. I also extended my trip to check out Tokyo again (I haven’t been back in almost a decade!) and also to hit the slopes at Shiga Kogen. Will post more on that trip soon, I promise!

We also had a photo shoot in Tokyo – results in Her World magazine!

Also in CLEO magazine.

What I learnt as part of my training as Clarins Shaping Facial Lift ambassador in Tokyo is that we Asians really are “blessed” with a larger face than our Caucasian counterparts – a whopping 40.3% wider on the lower part of the face and 14% thicker in the cheek area! I was a little bummed about that till my Caucasian friends reminded me that Asians and Asian skin ages slower and “better” on average too – you win some, you lose some, I guess!

Jade Seah

This product works to enhance your facial features by uplifting the face with three key actions: anti-fat, anti-sugar and anti-fluid. This basically means it helps with the release of excess fats on the face, the draining of excess fluids (it rids the face of water retention) and tightens and lifts the skin.

Results on over 200 Asian women after using the product for a month have shown a slimmer face (22.8% overall refining of the face), refined cheeks (5.4% reduction – and my biggest problem area!) and a lifted jawline (13.2% reduction in jaw-to-chin line sagging – no more double chin!).

Jade Seah

It definitely worked for me, but if you want to give it a try before you buy, here’s your chance: click here for a 5 piece trial supply of the new Shaping Facial Lift.

Will update on all my travels soonest!

How to Manage Relationship Age Difference | ChicPeek Ep 48

He’s a radio DJ and one half of The Muttons on 987fm, she’s a fashion personality and blogger – and they have a 17 year age gap between them. They’re getting married in a few weeks’ time and I managed to convince them to take a break from wedding prep to let me ask them really nosy questions, like how they got together, whether the age difference was a problem, what they hate about the other’s fashion choices, and the like, heh. (Thanks guys for being so candid and cool about it!)

Clear & Bright

My skin is extremely finicky. When people ask if it is oily or dry, I honestly don’t know how to answer them. It can get shiny, especially on the nose, but it is also prone to dryness, flaking and peeling. And I still get breakouts every now and then, which is really annoying.

I was introduced to Trinity Medical Centre (Marine Parade), and was invited to come down for treatments. I like that it’s in the east (rather than in town or in the west, where most clinics seem to be!) and hence really convenient for me.

I was asked to bring my daily skincare and makeup, so they could let me know if what I was using was suitable. Will do a separate post on my skincare regime soon!

At the clinic, I met with Dr Lim and Dr Kan, who assessed my skin and also gave me advice on my skincare. They suggested I get a carbon laser peel done as this would clear my skin, reduce pore size, enhance skin radiance, and help with my random breakouts.

Laser is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. They emit a single wavelength of light that is concentrated into an intense beam of energy. Laser is able to stimulate thermal reactions (hence heating effects) when absorbed. When irradiated on the skin, the laser light energy is absorbed by the pigments and converted to heat.

For the carbon laser peel, a thin layer of carbon is first spread over the skin.

Jade Seah

The laser beam is absorbed by the carbon particles due to the dark colour. The beam is thus focused on the epidermis.

It didn’t hurt, although it wasn’t exactly pleasurable either. It felt like pins and needles, and only started to hurt a little when it was almost done. There was also this odd knocking sound – Dr Kan explained that that was the sound of the laser hitting the carbon particles. There was also a slight suction sound as a gentle vacuum removed the carbon particles as the laser moved over to another carbon layer.

Jade Seah

The carbon particles apparently also exfoliate the skin and purge skin pores, so I was warned that I may experience a slight breakout in the first few days following treatment as my pores were purged.

I got one or two small spots in the days following; nothing major. And I am really happy with the results!

2014 Fashion Trends: The Making Of

The ChicPeek team got together to discuss what and where to film new episodes, and somehow we got sidetracked (as we do!) to bits of industry gossip. I shared with the team how the tables were turned on ME this time when I was interviewed by Mothership on uniforms (army or police? ACS or RI?) and who the best-dressed politician is, and then we got to talking about who got it seriously wrong (sartorially!) in 2013.

In case you are wondering what I meant by ‘the tables were turned on me’; yes, here’s me pouncing on boys in uniforms, lol.

So anyway that led to us deciding to cover what to throw out and what to keep in your wardrobe for 2014, and the team convinced me to open up my place for the filming.

Jade Seah

I am usually very private about my place; over the years, for various reasons, magazines and newspaper have asked to feature my place, but I have usually declined because of my family. They prefer to remain private. My mum balked when I asked her a few years ago if she was okay with a local magazine coming to feature my wardrobe some years ago.

After I moved out to my own place in 2010, I think some of mum may have rubbed off on me, and I still chose not have my place featured. However, I’ve since moved once again, and while my previous place was about 50% of how I wanted it to look, this new place is 90% (meaning almost; in my terms, that’s like practically perfect because I am a perfectionist!) there – dream home, fulfilled!

It is a conservation building and it was in real bad shape, meaning it was a real labour of love to get it to what it looks like now (structures, piping, plumbing, among the other aesthetics…), so I’ve decided to share. It also made filming a lot easier as there wasn’t a need to pack and move clothes, shoes and accessories around! I will give you the grand tour of the space in another episode of ChicPeek, but here’s a sneak peek in the meantime.

Jade Seah

DP Daryl is very precise in what he wants. This is how we achieved the top-angle shots in the video.

Went up to the roof as well!

Jade Seah

I daresay he does a better job of it than I do!

Had to balance in 3-inch heels and ‘walk up and down’ the ledge to shoot this one. It was a little scary!

Jade Seah

Terence seemed to be having a ball of a time from his even-higher perch. (Try it in heels next time though, buddy!)

ChicPeek x Gardens by the Bay

I sometimes run past the beautiful Gardens by the Bay on my long runs, and most races now incorporate that beautiful part of this wonderful country in the official route. Every time I run past, I peek in to see this beautiful, paradise-like place on the other side of the glass. I have actually been inside for photoshoots, (you can see one such shoot here), but it’s different when you are there for work and on a tight schedule to get all the shots in – there isn’t the luxury of really enjoying the place. On my list for 2013 was to make the time to take my folks and my gran there to be able to really explore and appreciate the wonderful flora.

I won’t share the many pictures from the day with my family as they prefer it this way (for those who have asked, that’s why I sometimes have food or holiday posts where I am all alone!), but what happened after that outing was that I was so impressed by the beauty of the place, and how lovely their Christmas display was, that I was determined to shoot an episode of ChicPeek there.

Jade Seah

I am glad to say we made it happen! Together with my production team, Luff Media, we shot at Gardens by the Bay in December for a special festive edition of ChicPeek.. Many, many thanks to my good friend, Valencia Taye (better known as Val, or tangaci to me, haha), who is a horticulturalist at the Gardens, for being instrumental in getting us clearance!

Jade Seah

The Gardens consists of the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Here’s an overview (literally; it’s taken from a higher vantage point) of the Flower Dome, which Val told me is the ‘dry’ part of the Gardens.

I love the place and I am proud that it’s one of Singapore’s attractions. One piece of advice if you’re planning on going though – take along a jacket as it’s pretty cold in there!
