Shimokitazawa

Konbanwa from Japan! So I took a snowboard trip to Niseko less than a month ago, and here I am, back again in the Land of the Rising Sun. I am not Japan-mad as some of my friends are (they make it a point to go to different parts of the country and make a trip at once to twice a year here); I think the food is great and it is wonderfully clean and efficient, but with limited time (I only have one lifetime!) and resources (travel takes so much of my savings it is not funny), I personally have a wish to explore the entire world, and not just one country, interesting and unique as its culture is.

So…why the hell am I back in Japan then?? I am here on business, and it is for a brand I really believe in –  and hence for a job I am most thankful and grateful for. Will share more when I can!

Work lasted all of three days, but I decided to give Tokyo one more chance to win my heart, and hence I extended my stay. The last time I was here was a decade ago, when I won return tickets as part of some Amazing Race-style competition in school. Otherwise, all I have seen of Tokyo these ten years has been of its airports while in transit (mostly enroute to LA and Sapporo).

On friends’ recommendations, I checked out some areas I never visited those years ago, such as Shimokitazawa. It’s somewhat hipster, full of cafes, cool mash-up shops (a record shop shares space with a bakery) and, for some strange reason, hair salons galore.

I had fun in Shimokita! More in the next post. I am now in Shiga Kogen and I need to sleep pronto as am aiming to be at breakfast by 730, on the slopes by 830.  xx

Travel Essential

I love jumpers, especially fuzzy or furry ones. They have tactile appeal – they feel so soft and cuddly! – and I also love them for adding texture to outfits. Considering the fact that I live in Singapore and spend most of my time in tropical heat (and humidity!)…I have way too many jumpers. In my defence, the air-con in most places in Singapore is crazy enough to warrant wearing something really warm!

Jumpers are also great when travelling as they offer warmth and can also be easily layered; it looks cute with a shirt underneath, collar peeking out; it also works under a trench coat, anorak or heavy winter jacket. I wore this tangerine one to death in NYC!

Pleats Please

NYC is still prettiest in Spring, when the weather is fine and skirts and shorts can come out to play! Tribeca is one of my favourite areas in the city, and it also hold special meaning as that’s where I stayed during all my trips there last year. There are some great bars and restaurants in the area (Nobu is not bad at all, but my favourites are Locanda Verde, Bouley and Marc Fogione), great shopping and also some lovely places (and random parks!) to explore.

Brigitte Bardot Forever

Was recently in Manila for a magazine shoot, and the kind sponsor, Sofitel invited us to their ‘BB Forever’ event, an event to celebrate the beautiful Brigitte Bardot. I love Brigitte Bardot’s classic beauty and sensuality – the woman is sexy without even trying! The theme for the night was to come looking like Bardot. Funnily enough, in my earlier days modelling, I was styled to look like Brigitte Bardot for a magazine – Seventeen magazine, if I remember right. My mum probably has the pictures somewhere…will post it if I manage to find them!

Anyway so I definitely had an idea of what the look entails, and how I wanted to look. I brought along a little cocktail dress that I had scored from a vintage store in Thailand years ago, low-heeled red Mary Janes and Sha, the makeup artist on shoot with me, kindly offered to help me with my hair and makeup. The final result!

And here’s the entire team that was in Manila for the shoot – thanks for making me look pretty!

Some of the gorgeous guests that night.

Bardot-themed cocktails, and St Tropez-inspired nibbles.

And a Bardot-inspired fashion show!

And here are a few of my favourite Bardot moments:

One Night in Bangkok

Finally getting round to uploading pictures from the many trips I’ve made in the past year (better late than never, k!). This was from a ‘girls only hen’s trip’ to a much-loved Singaporean destination – Bangkok! We got up to all kinds of crazy on this trip…am only sharing the ‘safe’ pictures! ;p

Room with a view.

Do the Bangkok cab squeeeeze. Tallest gets to sit in (leg-room) comfort up front! Heh.

Room with a view part two!

One apartment, six girls…mayhem!

Costume party.

Costume party part two.

Photobomb the selca!

Caught in the act!

She’s persistent. But so I am. Roped in the bride this time for extra power. The cracks are beginning to show in her resolve for the perfect selfie…

When you can’t beat ’em…

Met this doll at one of the Siam Square boutiques. Look at that face!

Toastie shopping break!

Another all-girls trip coming up – can’t wait!

Winter Wonderland (part two)

So while everyone in Singapore complains about the terrible haze (I admit I am no exception!) and increasing PSI readings, I think one way to deal with it is to imagine yourself in a land where the air is fresh and clean. I miss snowboarding! The pals are already in the midst of planning not one, but two trips – hopefully I will be able to join them then. For now, have to contend myself with pictures and memories. =)

I miss waking up to this view!

Soon!!
