Remembering Lee Kuan Yew in Our Rivers

jade seah

Been feeling very moody and mournful of late, so went for a run along the Kallang/Geylang River this morning, in time to catch this beautiful sunrise. Natural wonders and a spot of physical exertion always have a positive effect on me, and this was no different. It made me introspective and nostalgic, in a good way. I thought about how I used to wakeboard in these waters when I was in the Singapore Management University (SMU) & how I participated in several wakeboarding competitions. Held at the Kallang Riverside Park, my folks came to several of these competitions to support me & I remember them telling me about how filthy the rivers in Singapore were not that long ago.

The thought seems almost unfathomable as wakeboarders, canoeists, dragon-boaters & recreational fishermen share & enjoy the waters today.

I have read some accounts & articles (complete with pictures) on how the river was back in the day. (You can see a colourful and easily-read report on the project by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) here.)

The waters were literally dark with filth, while dead animals, human waste & other rubbish floated about. According to the accounts, the stench was at times unbearable.

It then took a visionary to make change happen.

“It should be a way of life to keep the water clean, to keep every stream, every culvert, every rivulet, free from unnecessary pollution. In ten years let us have fishing in the Singapore River and fishing in the Kallang River. It can be done.” – Lee Kuan Yew (1977)

Our then-Prime Minister was well ahead of his time. As part of his strategy for sustainable development in Singapore, he called for the clean-up of its several grossly polluted river systems. In 1977, he gave relevant government departments ten years to complete the project. I am proud to say, that true to Singapore style, the strategy to clean-up Singapore’s rivers was implemented within this time frame

“Only ten years ago our rivers were like sewers, smelly, dirty and devoid of fish or any aquatic life. This year marks the restoration of the Singapore, Rochor, Geylang and Kallang Rivers into clean watercourses. …… We now have pleasant riverscapes. We can walk along the river banks and fish or boat, all unthinkable only a few years ago. It is an achievement many societies dream of, but one only few achieved.” – Lee Kuan Yew (1987)

Today, I enjoyed a scenic run along the sparkling waters of the river, on a proper path lined with plants and colourful flowers. I saw fish & even caught sight of a water snake in the waters. I saw older folk practicing taichi on the banks; people walking their pets; children running about; saw dragonboaters and canoeists…basically Singaporeans, and foreign friends alike coming together, enjoying our little slice of nature in our urban neighbourhood.

Thank you, Sir, for your vision and detailed execution; for turning us from a third to a first world nation in less than a generation, and for making a Singapore I am so proud of.

Fringe Benefits

I find it difficult to find tops I like. I have a friend who has the same problem, and we concluded that the reason’s because we both like and are more confident of the bottom halves of our bodies more than we are of our top halves. Do you think this is true? Do you find it easier to buy clothes for the areas of your body that you like?

As a result, I’ve all manner of jeans – skinny, boyfriend, straight-legged, wide-legged – in all manner of washes, colours and prints (camou, florals, zebra, stripes, polka-dot and plaid, just to name a few); I wear mini-skirts, midi-skirts, maxi-skirts in all cuts; I have all kind of shorts and pants – really short-shorts, bermudas, and recently, culottes…(you get the picture). For tops however, I usually reach for slouchy tees (plus I borrow the boyfriend’s, how convenient, heh), straight-cut shirts and non-fitted, crew-neck tanks. I don’t wear anything very exposed and I seldom wear anything with a V-neck or anything remotely low-cut (I have a very bony collarbone/upper chest area that I am slightly conscious of).

So while I like unusual designs, because I don’t feel comfortable about wearing certain cuts, I am picky about what eventually makes it to my wardrobe. My choices are hence somewhat limited.

I was pleased then to get my hands on this top! It’s a little more exposed than stuff I usually wear (it’s cut in quite a bit and the arm-holes are pretty wide) but I couldn’t resist the cute fringed hem! Love the high-neck, of course, and that it’s made of georgette – which is not as light as chiffon so there’s a bit more structure. Current favourite!

Ah Boy vs. Mata Fight Over Girl: Dorothy Perkins Style Face-off | ChicPeek Ep 56

2 hunks + 1 babe = 1 very HOT episode of ChicPeek!

Benjamin Kheng (¼ of The Sam Willows and male lead in ‘Ah Boys to Men, The Musical’) goes against Daren Tan (star of the movie ‘That Girl in Pinafore’ and who also stars in Channel 5’s ‘Mata Mata’) in a Style Face-off to impress a girl!

These two look good, but do they know what women want? I challenge them to find an outfit for blogger Jessica Tham (tippytapp) – but they have to go through a series of physical challenges first!

Hey, I get to have a little fun too, right? Ladies, you can thank me in the comment box! =p

How to Stay Cool in the Heat

We’ve been having such sunny days of late! While it gets a little warm some days, even by my tropical-heat-loving standards, most days I love it, and I LOVE how there isn’t much rain. Hate the cold and wet of dreary rainy days!

Jade Seah

While it’s true I don’t feel warm easily and I don’t perspire much, which makes the tropical heat a lot more pleasant for me than for those who have “hot bodies” (heh), I also try as far as possible to dress for the weather. So while I have a lot of jackets/fuzzy jumpers/smart blazers and the like, I’ve not been doing the layered look much at all lately. Instead, my trusty shorts have seen a lot of wear-time, together with some forgotten dresses and singlets.

Jade Seah

My dresses especially are great for the heat as I prefer mine shift, straight or slouchy cut; nothing too form-fitting – don’t you find tight clothes very stifling when it’s warm out?

Jade Seah

White dresses are my favourite, and a disproportionate number of dresses in my wardrobe are white. This in spite of the fact that there are fewer chances for me to wear them as it’s inappropriate to wear a white dress to a wedding unless you’re the bride – and at this age, it seems there are a lot of weddings to attend indeed!

Jade Seah

Love this white shift from Headline Seoul which is minimalism the way I like – a clean silhouette with a play on textures (there’s a mix of materials on this number).

International Pillow Fight Day 2014 (Singapore, Haji Lane)

International Pillow Fight Day happened on 5th April, and Singapore held it’s own edition of it along Haji Lane. I went down hoping to have a good time (albeit with some apprehension, I admit). I certainly didn’t expect the mayhem and the kind of crazy fun we all had that day – having a go at complete strangers like children; laughing and shrieking like a mad person till I got a mild asthma attack; feathers flying all over Haji Lane. Made some new friends, shared many laughs, and had an altogether great time. My birthday was the next day on the 6th, and this was the perfect pre-party.

Thanks everyone for the fun!
